Measure the diameter of the nipple alone — not the areola — in millimeters, then add 2–4 mm of clearance. Most mothers land smaller than they expect; pumping should never pinch or blanch. The 20 mm insert exists exactly for the common case where a standard 24 mm tunnel is one size too roomy.
Both collect hands-free inside a nursing bra. The S4 is the newer generation — slimmer profile and a revised seal — and takes its own matched air bag and valve, which is why parts listings name the system they fit. When ordering spares, match the system name, not the look of the part.
Reclining slightly is fine; fully flat is not, because the anti-backflow design assumes you are more or less upright. For night pumping, prop yourself up the way you would to read.
Parts, almost always. A duckbill valve softens with every cycle and every wash until it no longer snaps fully shut, and suction quietly drains away. Swap the valve and air bag first — it takes two minutes — and expect to repeat that every four to twelve weeks of regular use. Motors rarely fade; membranes always do.
Body temperature — roughly 98–104°F. Hotter does not comfort the baby; it degrades live antibodies. Our warmers hold inside that band on their milk settings, which is the entire argument for thermostatic warming over a pan of hot water.
Yes — use the thaw program rather than the fastest setting, so the outer layer does not cook while the core stays ice. From freezer to feedable typically takes minutes, not the half hour a bowl of warm water needs.
The standard guidance: about 4 hours at room temperature, up to 4 days refrigerated, 6 months in a freezer (12 at −4°F). Our storage bottles carry writable stickers because 3 AM memory is not a storage system.
