The duckbill valve opens and shuts with every single cycle, and silicone remembers that. Once its lips no longer snap fully closed, part of each stroke leaks back instead of drawing milk. A fresh valve returns the pump to the suction curve it shipped with.
The air bag is the membrane that separates milk from motor — it transmits suction while keeping liquid out of the tubing. A stretched or nicked bag weakens the pull and risks moisture creeping toward the unit, so it earns replacement right alongside the valve.
